OSIRIS
Egyptian god of the underworld and of vegetation. He became the first pharaoh, but was killed by his jealous brother Seth. Osiris's wife Isis managed to revive him, but Seth tore the body to shreds. Osiris then became god of the underworld.

HORUS
Son of Osiris, and god of the sky. He appears in Egyptian texts with the head of a hawk or in the shape of a hawk. He was the special protector of the pharaohs, who were given the title The Living Horus'.

ANUBIS
Jackal-headed Anubis was the god of embalming and of burial-places. After the death of Osiris, Anubis embalmed his body and created the first mummy. In the underworld, he presided at the weighing of a dead person's heart to determine if their good deeds outweighed the bad.

Wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. She became the principal deity of funeral rites, reflecting her role at her husband Osiris's funeral. She was also represented as the archetypal mother.

The god of wisdom, Thoth bore the head of an ibis. He was traditionally the inventor of writing and in the underworld recorder the names of all the dead whose hearts were weighed.
